A National Gallery of Ireland canvas of Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Taking of Christ stretched and framed in a superb nineteenth century gilt frame with beautiful acanthus and lamb’s tongue ornament.
Painted at the height of Caravaggio's fame, the theatrical light and realistically observed figures are representative of his mature style. The drama reaches an emotional pitch as Judas kisses and identifies Christ, who does not resist his arrest by the soldiers, menacingly clad in shining black armour. The fleeing disciple on the left is St John the Evangelist, whose face is united with those of Jesus and Judas by moonlight.
The frame is fully restored and stabilised, with all work carried out in-house at Gallery33.
